Areas of Interest: Osteoporosis is a metabolic bone
disease characterised by low bone mineral density and deterioration of
bone tissue, leading to increased bone fragility and fractures. Over 60%
of women and 30% of men over 60 years of age will suffer an osteoporotic
fracture during the remainder of their lifetime. Identification of genes
that increase the individual prevalence for the disease might be useful
not only to identify individuals at risk and so help in prevention but are
useful to understand better the pathophysiology of the disease and to
identify potential drug targets. Current work include studies on a number
of polymorphisms in genes known to be involved in bone physiology such as
the VDR, ER, Col1A1, OPG and IL-6 and we are looking forward to expand our
studies not only on more genes but also to carry out family studies and
large population association studies.
